Sophie has a grant to spend several months writing in Sri Lanka next year, and it has been my plan to spend a month or so with her. We were there for two weeks a couple of years ago, and had already mapped out a vague itinerary based on the things we enjoyed: a few days in the beautiful Galle fort, some time on the beach at Unawatuna, a trip up the east coast to the famous surf beaches of Trinco.

Now we're wondering if we've got any skills that might be useful to the residents of these towns, as they face repairing the damage done by the tsunamis that inundated Sri Lanka's coastline. In the meantime, we can donate: Red Cross, World Vision, Care and Caritas are all running appeals.

Helen says:

I'm usually anxious about how money gets spent by NGOs, so I approached the tsunami appeals with caution. But when I went to donate to Medicins Sans Frontieres, (my charity of choice - maybe its the suppressed doctor in me, maybe the francophile), I found on their website a message indicating that they've actually got enough money to support their current tsunami projects, and to please go and donate elsewhere. Respect.
