Weekend Projects

People in a liftOne of the nice things about having design skills (and I really don’t mean this sarcastically) is that you occasionally get called upon to do stuff for your mates pro bono. While I tend to approach these jobs in a reasonably professional way (like getting a proper brief and following some kind of Process), I usually take the opportunity to stretch my stylistic legs a little bit and try things that normal client work generally doesn’t seem to allow.

Some of my favourite work has come out of these little gigs, and for some reason, looking back over bits and pieces from the last few years, they seem a much better guage of my development as a designer than most of my other stuff.

This weekend, I finished off a couple of little jobs, the first a flier for Just Pretending’s new show Company and the second an invitation for a friend’s hens’ night. Both of them feel a lot more ‘me’ than anything else I’ve worked on lately, and I’ve started this working week much refreshed because of it.

Love the flier V!

Was that you miss aa? Bloody loved that flier. You honoured the name of Sondheim by producing a design worthy of his music. And I mean that as a compliment.

Khoi Vinh says:

They're both terrific. It's personal work like this that's a nice reminder of why we spend so much time learning these tedious skills. Nicely done.
