The House of Pain

For the first time in 24 years, the Australian Senate – the so-called 'house of review' – is under the control of the Government, meaning that until the next election the more horrible of the major parties can basically do what it wants. The legislative agenda for the next three yeaers includes nasty industrial relations 'reform', changes to media ownership law, and the sale of our one remaining useful and money-making public asset, Telstra, all of which makes my hair stand on end. Not to mention the uninterrupted wholesale destruction of Tasmania's ancient forests. Gotta love democracy.

Tom says:
I agree with the suggestion that we should just get rid of the Senate for the next three years and save the country a lot of money. I'm tipping there won't be a great deal of "reviewing" going on. Not so much a house of review as a house of Liberal love.
Helen says:
I feel ill. I am disgusted by democracy (though mostly because my team didn't win). I actually find myself pining for the days last week when we thought family first would hold the balance of power.
Sigh. If only.
