Fight for your right to barrack

I’ve hung back a bit from writing about the success of my footy team early in the season. Traditionally, the Cats have failed to meet the high expectations of fans and punters, and have choked on the ‘premiership favourite’ tag on the rare occasion it’s been applied. It’s tempting, therefore, to try to let them fly under the radar for as long as possible by making excuses for their good form - they’re playing at home, they’ve been lucky with injuries, Kent won’t kick eight goals every week. But it’s all bullshit: the Cats look fit and tough and hungry, and are playing the kind of footy that all fans of AFL want to see. Based on current form and their solid improvement over the last few seasons, they should go on to win the flag this year, and if they do, they’ll deserve it. To block our ears and hearts to the possibility denies them, and us, the real pleasure of a footy season, which is the week-in, week-out celebration of barracking for a winning (and losing, too) team. If they don’t come out on top in September, then there’s always next year. Forty-three ‘next years’ haven’t poisoned it, and a forty-fourth won’t kill us either. In the meantime, I want to savour every moment.

I guess you've learned your lesson now, huh?
