Australian Art Orchestra Redux

A little under two years ago, I redesigned the Australian Art Orchestra website, my first major project using web standards, which I achieved while gripping Designing with Web Standards firmly at all times. This week, we launched a major new redesign, for which I’ve written tighter code and applied my now more mature understanding of the way websites work. All this has been aided by some useful statistics and great feedback we’ve had in the intervening period.

One of the reasons for undertaking a redesign of this scope was to accommodate the increased depth of information the site covers. Over the last year or so, it became clear that additions were straining the natural logic of the site, and with the new version we’ve taken some care to ‘future-proof’ both the structure and the navigation. There’s also the kernel of a podcast there, which is an area we’re hoping to develop significantly over the next six months or so.
As usual, it’s been a real pleasure working with the AAO staff, who are articulate about their requirements, respectful of my skills and knowledge and full of great ideas. It’s also immensely satisfying to be able to compare previous iterations of the site with the new one and see the clear trail of my own progress as designer and developer, as well as the growth in stature of the Orchestra itself.
